This easy granny square blanket is a quick-to-stitch baby shower gift. Decorate it with some crochet appliques and it will be a one-of-a-kind treasure that will make any baby smile. See my etsy shop to download applique patterns: www.etsy.com/shop/TorreyaTreasures
To begin, choose what kind of yarn you want to use. Many baby friendly yarns are light weight size 3. For my most recent baby blanket project I used Yarn Bee Dee-lish Boutique Pomegranate Pudding. One 5.3 oz skein will make a 28 square inch blanket.
Step 1: Using a size G/4.25mm crochet hook, ch 5 and slst into first ch st to make a ring.
Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as a dc st now and throughout), 2 dc into ring, *ch 2, 3 dc into ring, repeat from * 2 more times, ch 2, slst into top of ch 3 to join.
Rnd 2: Slst into next 2 dc sts, slst into ch 2 corner sp, (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into same ch 2 corner sp, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner sp, repeat from * 2 more times, slst to top of ch 3 to join.
Rnd 3: Slst into next 2 dc sts, slst into corner sp, (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into same corner sp, *3 dc into sp between dc clusters of rnd 2, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into next corner sp, repeat from * 2 more times, 3 dc in next sp between clusters, slst to top of ch 3 to join.
Continue working in this manner, beginning each new round by slst into corner sp. End each round by joining to ch 3 with a slst.
When you've reached the desired size of the square add a simple dc edging with picots on every 3rd dc and 5 dc sts in the corners.
Now it's time to add some appliques.
